It's time to draw a line under UKIP. It was fun while it lasted and it proved that only 17% of the UK electorate who bother to cast a vote are actually anti-EU. That means that a whopping 83% are raring to go and, hopefully, make an even big success of the opportunities that are spread before us across the English Channel.

Many Buckinghamshire businesses would be a lot less prosperous if it wasn't for the EU connection. So with the revised mandate hammered out in Brussels we should now forget about the "Federal Superstate" tag and get on with reaping the benefits that this multi-national club has on offer.

With the farrago of earlier EU treaties now somewhat amalgamated and the decision-making process streamlined, we can now work as a union of 25 independent states all striving for a common cause. There are so many crucial things in our everyday lives that can be tackled more successfully as part of a big club rather than frustrated bystander.

There will be no usurping of individual government's powers as the scaremongers would have us believe. National governments will have a right to send back proposed EU legislation for review. And a new formula on voting structures quite rightly gives countries with larger population a louder voice in the council. So, for instance, Britain will have more influence than, say, Malta or Latvia.

As a nation we have remained on the terraces for far too long while successive governments have striven to appease their sceptical voters. It's time to move positively into the midfield and further determine the EU's way forward.
