With new rail prices about increase well above
the rate of inflation it is, perhaps, appropriate
that the new Milton Keynes and Bletchley Rail
Users Group (MK&B RUG) by local MP Dr Phyllis
Starkey. Its inaugural meeting was facilitated
by Milton Keynes & North Bucks Chamber of
Commerce.
A committee of 20 was elected and four representatives
joined a meeting of Silverlink and the Rail Passenger
Council to review the current timetable. Unfortunately
at that time the price increases had not been
announced otherwise the Group could, no doubt,
have voiced their strong opposition to the rising
costs.
However, Dr Starkey says: “The group will
provide a clear voice for all rail passengers
from Milton Keynes to London and the North, as
well as those commuting in to Milton Keynes by
rail.
“I will continue to work with the MK&B
RUG to secure timetable improvements in the short-term
and lobby ministers and the SRA to increase rail
capacity at Milton Keynes for the future."
Chamber of commerce, chief executive Sean Hickey,
explains: “We see this
as a first step in ensuring that commuters, both
in and out of the area, have their say in the
planning of future passenger timetables. We will
continue working with other partners in the city
to ensure we have the rail services we need for
our future.”
