There’s hardly a week goes by these days
without some new computer virus taking control
of our systems. The latest is called the “drive
by” virus because it attacks without warning
(so what’s new?).
According to Tony Glover, technology editor of
The Business, “It is by far the worst security
threat companies have faced. It works by taking
the user to an invisible staging site while he
or she is logging onto a genuine site.
“The user is unaware this has happened
and need do nothing other than surf the internet
to fall prey to a ‘drive-by’ attack.
Once the unwitting victim has been ‘hit’
the criminal can hack into their system and even
take control of their computer.”
It is said that, unlike the recent spate of high-profile
viruses such as MyDoom, the new breed of viruses
is designed by people who want to remain anonymous.
Glover’s information source has even said
that the virus worm attacks earlier this year
have been a sort of dress rehearsal fort a large-scale
attack possibly by terrorists.
